How to solve a logic grid puzzle

A logic grid puzzle looks intimidating and works beautifully once you know the routine. Every CAPER case follows the same five steps:

  1. Read the story. It names the location where the job went down. That’s the spot you’re solving for.
  2. Read every clue. Some clues confirm a match (“X is the one who…”). Most rule something out (“X has never…”). Both are useful.
  3. Mark the grid. Put an X where something is ruled out and a check mark where it’s confirmed. Work one clue at a time.
  4. Use elimination. When a suspect has only one method left, it’s theirs. When a method fits only one suspect, it’s theirs too.
  5. Name the answer. Combine the suspect, the method and the location: who did it, how, and where.
Tip: start with the clue that ties a method directly to a place. It anchors everything else.
